Reflection
Some of the minor cultural differences I faced ranged from having to use the 24-hour time format to slow service when dining out. The largest challenge I encountered at work was the language barrier with other employees and locals. Since proper communication is integral to any job I had to make sure I was always listening intently. Often times when I was given a task I would either repeat it back to confirm I heard properly or ask another question to clarify. My flexibility was tested while sitting at the office because I never knew who or what would come through the door and whether I could help or not. My top three phrases in Italian were Hello, Thank you, and I can't speak Italian. My problem-solving skills came into use whenever I used the computer at work because the interface was all in Italian. Once I had to use google translate on my phone to figure out which button was "Print"! Overall my time in Sorrento helped me develop not only personally, but also professionally. When consistently faced with challenges your only choice is to grow.
